Florian Plettenberg’s strange West Ham transfer claim as Steven Bergwijn nets in Ajax win

Florian Plettenberg has made a strange West Ham United transfer claim as Steven Bergwijn nets in an Ajax win.

A Sky Sports Germany reporter has gone against the grain by contradicting several of his fellow so-called ITK transfer reporters regarding West Ham’s interest in Steven Bergwijn.

Claims from Holland last month stated that West Ham technical director Tim Steidten was lining up a move to bring Bergwijn back to London from Ajax after his unsuccessful spell at Spurs.

Ajax’s manager even admitted the chance of Bergwijn joining West Ham in January was ‘probably the case’.

And the player himself – sold to Ajax in the summer of 2022 after just eight goals in 83 appearances for Tottenham – was coy when asked directly about rumours of a move to West Ham.

Plettenberg’s strange West Ham transfer claim

Renowned transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano then reported that Bergwijn remains a big West Ham target for the January transfer window.

And yesterday reports from top sources in Holland and Sky Sports here in the UK claimed Ajax and the player are open to a deal with the Hammers who are said to be discussing both loan and permanent deals.

Steidten has history when it comes to Ajax. The hugely popular Hammers technical director pulled off two of the deals of the summer window signing Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez for a combined £72m.

John Heitinga, who was Bergwijn’s interim manager for a spell at Ajax, is also at West Ham as one of Moyes’ assistants.

Throw in the fact Moyes recently dropped a huge transfer hint when he said he felt West Ham were short in the left attacking role and it all seems to add up.

Not according to a Sky Sports Germany reporter. Because he’s contradicted everyone.

‘Ajax match-winner not a Hammers target’

Florian Plettenberg has made a strange West Ham transfer claim as Bergwijn nets in Ajax win.

Bergwijn scored the winner as Ajax beat Hannover 96 in a friendly on Sunday.

And Plettenberg took to social media to claim he is NOT in fact a ‘serious’ target for West Ham as being reported pretty much everywhere else.

The German states the Hammers have other targets in mind.

“Understand that West Ham is not seriously considering signing Bergwijn in the winter,” Plettenberg said.

“They have other players on their list.”
