There is huge Steven Bergwijn news for West Ham United emerging from Holland and Sky Sports as a move gathers pace.

West Ham are being linked with a move for another Ajax star in the shape of Steven Bergwijn.

We reported on Hammers News about claims from Holland last month that West Ham technical director Tim Steidten was lining up a move to bring Bergwijn back to London after an unsuccessful spell at Spurs.

Ajax’s manager even admitted the possibility of Bergwijn joining West Ham in January was ‘probably the case’.

And the player himself – sold to Ajax in the summer of 2022 after just eight goals in 83 appearances for Tottenham – was coy when asked directly about rumours of a move to West Ham.

Huge Bergwijn news from Holland and Sky Sports

Steidten has history when it comes to Ajax. The hugely popular Hammers technical director pulled off two of the deals of the summer window signing Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez for a combined £72m.

Yesterday transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano reported that Bergwijn remains a big West Ham target for the January transfer window.

“Understand Steven Bergwijn is one of the top targets for West Ham in the January transfer window in case they will be able to find budget after outgoings,” Romano said.

“More PL and Saudi clubs are also keen on Bergwijn as he could leave Ajax in case of good proposal.”

Well things appear to be developing rapidly on this one.

There’s huge Bergwijn news for West Ham from Holland and Sky Sports as the move gathers pace.

Because according to leading Dutch outlets Voetbal International and Football Oranje, not only are Ajax facing the financial reality of having to do another deal with West Ham but Bergwijn himself is open to the move.

Ajax open to deal and so is player

And here in England, Sky Sports is reporting West Ham are talking to Ajax over both a loan – presumably with an option – and straight purchase deals.

“West Ham United is seriously interested in the 26-year-old attacker,” Voetbal International report.

“Ajax has not yet received an offer for Bergwijn, but that could come soon. West Ham have been tracking Bergwijn for some time and have identified him as a top target for January. In principle, the club from Amsterdam would rather not let Bergwijn go, but with a sale the club can close a financial gap…

“At West Ham, Bergwijn could be reunited with a number of old acquaintances. Edson Álvarez and Mohammed Kudus have been playing there since last summer, while John Heitinga works there as assistant coach to David Moyes.

Hammers explore two types of deal

“Although Bergwijn recently indicated that he does not necessarily have to leave Ajax, he is open to leaving provided the overall picture is right.”

Meanwhile Sky Sports states: “West Ham remain in the market for a wide forward this month and Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn is one of a number of players they are looking at.

“Bergwijn joined Ajax from Tottenham 18 months ago and has three-and-a-half years left on his contract.

“West Ham are exploring both a loan and a permanent deal.”

Moyes recently dropped a huge transfer hint when he said he felt West Ham were short in the left attacking role. The Scot admitted he was having to play Lucas Paqueta ‘out of position’ there as a result.

So a move for 26-year-old Bergwijn makes perfect sense.

It would also surely spell the end for Said Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet at West Ham.
