Gianluca Scamacca is absolutely on fire in Italy with Atalanta, and West Ham United manager David Moyes must be regretting selling the striker.

West Ham boss David Moyes signed Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo in the summer of 2022 for around £35 million (Sky Sports).

However, the Hammers farmed him out to Atalanta for around £21-25 million just one year later (talkSPORT), and surprise, surprise, he bagged a goal in his first start for the Serie A side.

Scamacca failed to succeed at the London Stadium. Many questioned his attitude and work-rate, but as far as I’m concerned, he was totally isolated through the middle, and was painfully ill-suited to Moyes’s system.

The Hammers boss should have made more of an effort to get the best out of the Italian by trying a different formation. The striker is such a good player, and Moyes clearly gave up on him too soon…

The former Sassuolo man has made a brilliant start to life with Atalanta. He has scored five goals for his club and one for his country for a total of six this season (Soccerbase).

The 24-year-old scored for his side during a 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan on Saturday, and he bagged two unbelievable goals in the game before last for Atalanta as well.

So that’s three goals in his last two games for the 6ft 5in striker. Why oh why did we give up on him so soon? To make matters even worse, whilst the Italian is lighting it up out in Italy, Michail Antonio is having all sorts of problems in front of goal in England.

The thing is, had Moyes kept the Italian and played him through the middle in between Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus, with Lucas Paqueta slotted in behind him, I’m sure he would have succeeded at the London Stadium.

Or what about if Moyes would have played him in a 4-4-2, just like the Scot set up his team away at Brentford on Saturday.

I just feel like the 60-year-old Hammers boss gave up on the 24-year-old far too quickly. He should have given him a proper chance to show what he’s capable of by setting his team up in a system that would get the best out of the striker.

Now we’re stuck with Michail Antonio – a striker who couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo right now – whilst Gianluca Scamacca is ripping it up out in Serie A. It was a really, really poor decision by Moyes to sell the Italian.
