A Telegraph man has offered a completely different take on the David Moyes contract situation at West Ham.

No two days are the same in the wonderful world of West Ham.

The fact David Moyes’ contract at West Ham expires at the end of the season was always going to create headlines, speculation and debate.

Question marks over the Scot’s future have been raised for over a year now.

Moyes has admitted himself he twice came close to losing his job during the difficulties of last season’s Premier League campaign.

Former West Ham manager Harry Redknapp recently revealed he believes West Ham and the Scot would have parted ways in the summer had it not been for the Europa Conference League triumph.

Telegraph man’s completely different take Moyes situation

There has been talk for some time that West Ham would part ways with Moyes when his contract is up at the end of the season.

Many West Ham fans are divided over the manager, some even conflicted within themselves. There is a faction who feel he has earned a new deal to continue what he has built in east London. Others want a more attack-minded, modern, progressive coach in charge with misgivings over Moyes’ style of play and approach.

Speculation has once again been rife over whether or not Moyes will be offered a new deal this week.

A journalist claimed sources had informed him Moyes was telling friends – that he will leave the Hammers at the end of the campaign.

It was reported that Moyes has told those friends he “won’t be at West Ham next year” and that he ‘has had no signals from club chiefs they want him long-term’. It was also claimed that work has already started in the search for the Scot’s successor.

Moyes spoke out to deny those claims, insisting he has very few close friends he would share such information with.

And majority owner David Sullivan set a January date for Hammers contract talks with Moyes according to the main man himself.

Hammers supporting journo ‘baffled’ by sudden clamour

There has been a clamour for Moyes to be given a new deal after West Ham brought the curtain down on 2023 with their 32nd win over the calendar year at Arsenal.

But the sudden urgency from many fans and the wider football media to reward the Scot with a new contract has been questioned by West Ham-supporting journalist Dan Silver.

And the Telegraph man has offered a completely different take on the Moyes contract situation at West Ham.

Silver is bemused by the sudden obsession over Moyes’ contract. And he says those calling for the Scot to be handed a new deal off the back of the Arsenal win are ‘just as reductive’ as those calling for his head after a bad result.

“Baffled by the obsession with Moyes’ contract,” the former Mirror now Telegraph man said.

‘Development not manager is key’

“Those demanding a new deal after a good run of games are as reductive as those demanding he be sacked after a bad one. In my opinion conversation needs to be about a long-term development plan for the club, not its current manager…

“What is the plan for the next five seasons? How do we regenerate the second oldest squad in the league? How do we create a pathway for youth (both those already at the club, and those we’d like to attract)?”

As pointed out on several occasions by Hammers News, there was nothing unusual about the fact West Ham had not held contract talks with Moyes yet.

That is how it might be viewed outside of West Ham given what Moyes has – and is – achieving. But Sullivan has a strict policy about not discussing manager contracts until the second half of campaigns.

There is now intense speculation that Moyes will be handed a new two-and-a-half year deal in January.
