Leeds may have sent West Ham a cheeky message on social media ahead of an ‘imminent’ bid for star Wilfried Gnonto.

Social media has become a central medium in the modern world of football transfers.

Indeed many fans of West Ham and Leeds United will consume lot of the content about their club via X and the likes of Facebook.

Those who have been following the January transfer window rumour mill will have seen West Ham and Leeds have been sharing some column inches in the last few days.

Leeds may have sent West Ham a cheeky message

West Ham are said to be hunting the market for a new forward and Leeds boss Daniel Farke is actively trying to bolster his defence.

We reported on Hammers News that two journalists – one of whom is the top source for Leeds news – have claimed David Moyes is interested in Wilfried Gnonto while Ben Johnson is a target for the Elland Road outfit.

The Hammers were heavily linked with Leeds ace Gnonto – who can play across the front three positions – in the summer window.

Interestingly Moyes originally wanted to sign the 13-capped Italy international from FC Zurich before he joined Leeds in the summer of 2022.

Hands off our Wilfried

It has been reported this week that West Ham are eyeing a move for Gnonto, and are set to make a bid ‘within days’.

Especially with Said Benrahma looking likely to be sold, injuries ruling out Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus away at AFCON.

Despite making just seven appearances this season, many Leeds fans don’t want to lose Gnonto as they chase promotion back to the Premier League.

There have been rumours Gnonto may go AWOL again after he made it clear he wanted to leave in the summer.

Obviously such behaviour should not be condoned. However it would clearly be in West Ham’s interests if the Italian international did try and force a move away.

‘Working hard’

But Leeds may have sent West Ham a cheeky message on social media ahead of the ‘imminent’ bid for Gnonto.

With reports fizzing across the internet of West Ham’s interest and supposedly imminent move, Leeds took to X to post a picture of Gnonto in training with a big smile on his face.

It was captioned: “Willy working hard!”

Is this Leeds’ way of dismissing rumours the diminutive attacker might kick off to force a move to West Ham?

Leeds actually did something very similar when West Ham were being linked with Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha in the not-too-distant past.

Whether they would be interested in selling remains to be seen.

But there’s only one way for West Ham to find out.

And if Gnonto does end up at the London Stadium, West Ham may well remember this post and put out a similar one of their own.
