West Ham face Backa Topola in the Europa League tonight and Thilo Kehrer will surely be given a chance to start the game.

The West Ham vs Backa Topola Europa League clash will provide David Moyes with a great chance to give his fringe players some game time – players like Thilo Kehrer.

The German defender, who turned 27 today, joined West Ham from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2022 for around £13 million.

He made a slow start to life with the Hammers, but his form improved greatly during the second-half of last season.

However, he has taken a back seat this term, with just 18 minutes Premier League action to his name coming from three late substitute appearances (Transfermarkt).

The outlook seems pretty bleak for Kehrer, and he was heavily linked with a move away from West Ham in the summer. So with that in mind, he will be thinking that if Moyes doesn’t start him tonight in what should be our easiest game of the group, his time in East London could be as good as finished…

Kehrer surely in line to start for West Ham vs Backa Topola

Moyes will undoubtedly ring the changes for the Europa League Group A game tonight.

Vladimir Coufal could do with a rest, having played all five Premier League games so far this season, as well as representing his country.

And the Backa Topola clash will be the ideal chance for Moyes to give Kehrer a start at right-back.

The Germany international is definitely better playing there than he is at centre-back – his errors just don’t seem to be as costly.

The thing is, Kehrer is actually a very good player on his day – you don’t get given 27 caps for Germany if you’re not. He just has to work on cutting the stupid mistakes out of his game, and then he could go on to be a big player for us, I’m sure of it.

However, if Moyes doesn’t start Kehrer for West Ham against Backa Topola, it will send out a strong message that the 27-year-old is not wanted or needed by the Scot anymore.
