West Ham United manager David Moyes has an incredibly big problem on his hands right now.

David Moyes would have been delighted with West Ham United’s much-needed win over Brentford at the London Stadium on Monday night – his job was said to be on the line before kick-off.

It was a thrilling attacking performance from the Hammers, but there was one particular concern on display against the Bees, and it was painfully obvious to see the root cause of the issue.

Time and time again this season, we have been incredibly easy to play against due to some truly shocking defensive performances. Our record of 46 goals conceded in 26 Premier League games tells its own story.

The Scot has bemoaned some of the comical defending that many of his players have displayed this season.

Moyes once again moaned about his side’s inability to defend properly after our 4-2 win over Brentford on Monday night (WHUFC.com).

And I think the answer is staring Moyes squarely in the face – club captain Kurt Zouma…

The 29-year-old was made club captain at the start of the season – a decision from Moyes that was baffling at the time and one that now looks just simply inept.

Firstly, let me make something very clear indeed – Zouma is not captain material. He doesn’t lead by example on the pitch, nor does he off of it.

The Frenchman didn’t speak to the media for two weeks when West Ham were going through our worst period of the season.

And finally, Zouma is absolutely finished at Premier League level. His legs have gone and he looks completely lost out there right now.

The former Chelsea centre-back’s body positioning has been completely out of whack, his passing is atrocious and when he runs he looks like he’s going to break down at any second.

Sometimes this happens in elite level sport unfortunately. After numerous injuries and subsequent surgeries, Kurt Zouma just isn’t the player he once was anymore.

Hopefully David Moyes identifies Zouma as the root cause of West Ham United’s defensive problems this season before it’s too late.

If he does, the question then becomes who does he put in alongside Konstantinos Mavropanos? Nayef Aguerd has been a liability this season, and he was dropped for our last match. Perhaps Angelo Ogbonna could return to the side? The Italian kept a clean sheet when playing alongside Dinos away at Arsenal this season after all.

One thing’s for sure, Kurt Zouma is now being targeted week in, week out by the opposition, and Moyes has to prevent that from happening again. It’s just hugely frustrating that the Scot made a rod for his own back by naming the Frenchman as club captain six months ago.
