'West Ham have signed something very rare in Gianluca Scamacca' raves David Moyes who called Pedro Obiang for character reference

‘West Ham have signed something very rare in Gianluca Scamacca’ raves David Moyes who called Pedro Obiang for a character reference.

Moyes ended his 18-month search for a new striker when he signed Italy striker Scamacca for £35m from Sassuolo last week.

Hammers fans may have been hugely disappointed to learn the towering new boy was not in the squad for West Ham’s final pre-season friendly at Lens on Saturday.

But it seems they have plenty to look forward to from the former Roma and PSV youth star when he does finally pull on the famous claret and blue.

We’ve already highlighted the new West Ham star’s comparisons with Zlatan Ibrahimovic from his time in Serie A.

And the fact the 23-year-old learned from the best as a young player when he was personally trained by legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

West Ham fans have been delighted to learn Scamacca is not here for the money having turned down the likes of moneybags PSG to sign for the Hammers on a very modest weekly wage by modern standards.

Hammers assistant coach Paul Nevin gave a tantalising tease about how Scamacca has already impressed in West Ham training during his first week with the club.

And looking at the stats does not disappoint either, after it emerged Scamacca possesses one of the best clear cut chance conversion rates in Serie A.

Well now Hammers fans have heard everything they will need to know about Scamacca from the man who matters most in an interview with The Evening Standard.

‘West Ham have signed something very rare in Gianluca Scamacca’ raves Moyes who called Pedro Obiang for a character reference as part of his renowned due diligence he does for all transfers.

“We’ve been watching him for some time and even considered going for him last January,” Moyes told The Evening Standard.

“He has a presence as a player with his size (6ft 5ins) and his ability to take the ball in, retain possession.

“We see him helping in maybe a different way to what we’ve had and his youthfulness means we know there is more room for improvement. It’s very rare you can have a top striker at 23 years of age — but he is.

“We had great encouragement about him as well from our former player Pedro Obiang, who played with him at Sassuolo. He told us about his character and from what we’ve seen we’ve been really pleased although like all overseas players, they need time to settle in.”

As Moyes says, Scamacca brings so much to the table for West Ham. It is extremely rare for the Hammers to get a player – particularly a striker – this good, this young.

Scamacca has power, pace and guile as well as a tireless workrate and enthusiasm, as anyone who watches Serie A will have witnessed.

Having a ruthless, clinical presence in front of goal will make West Ham a completely different animal.
