West Ham coach Paul Nevin has delivered a hugely exciting verdict on what he has seen from Gianluca Scamacca in training.
Hammers fans were hugely disappointed to learn new £35m striker signing Scamacca was not in the squad for West Ham’s final pre-season friendly at Lens on Saturday.
The Italy international ended David Moyes’ 18-month search for a new striker when he officially signed at the start of the week.

But the 23-year-old remained in Stratford while West Ham played out a drab 0-0 draw in France.
It seems supporters should not be too despondent at not getting the chance to see their new 6ft 5in forward in action, though.
Because by all accounts he is looking seriously good ahead of the season opener against Manchester City next weekend.

West Ham coach Nevin has delivered a hugely exciting verdict on what he has seen from Scamacca in training this week.
Speaking to West Ham’s website after the Lens draw, Nevin offered a tantalising update on our number seven which suggests he will have a big impact at West Ham, on and off the pitch.
“The character of the team is really important,” Nevin told whufc.com.
“There are a lot of players out there with talent but it’s the right mentality you need as well and with Gianluca Scamacca we did our research and he’s shown both sides of that.

“The work he’s done this week has been fantastic and we kept him at Rush Green to continue his pre-season while we had this game, in light of trying to prepare him as quickly as we can.”
It all sounds very promising.
And West Ham will certainly need inspiration from somewhere if their pre-season performances are anything to go by.

The team has looked lethargic and lacking in pace and ideas at times.
Scamacca brings power, pace and guile as well as a tireless workrate and enthusiasm, as anyone who watches Serie A will attest.
Perhaps the prospect of facing Man City is what West Ham need too in order to focus a few minds.
