A Sky Sports forecast made a gross West Ham miscalculation over relegation and the heat is still very much on for the Hammers.

Liverpool put a dent in West Ham’s recent revival with a lucky win at the London Stadium on Wednesday night.

Vastly improved performances from the Hammers of late looked to have put the club on the brink of safety and sealed a second consecutive European semi-final.

Before the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, Sky Sports declared West Ham were effectively already safe from relegation.

The Sky Sports News Football Show did an in-depth analysis of the remaining fixtures, previous points totals needed to survive in the Premier League and points per game ratios.

And the feature said 33.8 points would likely be needed to survive this season.

Hammers News called it right way back in January

That made West Ham safe already as the Hammers were on 34 points following the win over Bournemouth.

But the Sky Sports forecast made a gross West Ham miscalculation over relegation and the heat is still very much on.

Back in January Hammers News carried out our own in-depth analysis which estimated as much as 38 points could be needed to survive this season – or 37 with a superior goal difference.

And that looks a much more realistic figure following recent results involving West Ham and their relegation rivals.

Wins for Bournemouth, Leicester and Nottingham Forest over the last few days look like making a mockery of Sky’s forecast given the fact several of the teams in the bottom nine play one another in the run-in.

A total of anything less than 36 points looks very dangerous indeed. And that means West Ham will likely need at least one more win and a draw or two more wins to be sure of safety.

Given the much improved form of David Moyes’ side, fans will be hoping that could come at Crystal Palace this weekend.

But failure to get a positive result in that game will pile the pressure on tough tests against free-scoring Manchester City and Man United next week.

Sky Sports had West Ham as being out of the woods. We are anything but as things stand and cannot afford to be complacent.

For example at least two of four clubs below us will pick up points this weekend as Bournemouth play Leeds and Leicester host Everton.

West Ham play Leeds and Leciester to finish the season. So the Hammers do not want to be going into those games knowing their opponents could have the incentive of going above them.

A point against Liverpool would have been ideal. Now Palace suddenly becomes huge for West Ham.
