UEFA appoint Dutch referee who has dished out 143 cards in 34 games for West Ham v Frankfurt Europa League clash

UEFA has appointed a Dutch referee who has dished out 143 cards in 34 games to officiate the West Ham v Frankfurt Europa League semi-final first leg clash.

It has been something of a mixed bag for West Ham in terms of the match officials overseeing their Europa League games this season.

West Ham boss David Moyes was so angry with the performance of controversial ref Felix Zwayer in the first leg of the quarter-final against Lyon that he refused to comment on him after the 1-1 draw.

Ahead of that first leg, fellow West Ham website KUMB reported how Zwayer was once suspended from football by the German Football Association.

But there was major referee relief for West Ham ahead of the second leg when UEFA picked Moyes favourite Sandro Scharer to take charge of the famous 3-0 win in France.

The highly-rated young Swiss referee Scharer – who was praised by Moyes for his performance overseeing West Ham’s match away at Sevilla – was in charge and put on another excellent display of officiating.

West Ham now face German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the huge semi-final first leg at the London Stadium on Thursday night.

And UEFA have today appointed a Dutch referee who has dished out 143 cards in 34 games for the West Ham v Frankfurt Europa League clash.

Dutch ref Serdar Gözübüyük has been officially named as the referee for the first leg at West Ham.

He will be assisted by his fellow Dutchmen Joost van Zuilen and Johan Balder while other officials from Holland – Pol van Boekel and Dennis Higler – will be on VAR duty.

Greek official Tasos Sidiropoulos will be fourth official.

West Ham boss Moyes will be warning his players to be on their guard given Gözübüyük’s record.

The Dutch-Turkish ref has issued a whopping 136 yellow cards and seven red cards in just 34 games so far this season (SoccerBase).

Back in August he issued nine yellow cards in a Europa Conference League match between Santa Clara and Partizan.

In a match between Vitesse Arnhem and Feyenoord in October, the ref appointed to oversee one of the biggest matches in West Ham’s history handed out six yellows and two reds.

The last time Gözübüyük was in charge of a Europa League game was Rangers’s 3-0 home win over Red Star Belgrade last month in which he dished out six yellow cards.

In his last Europa League game before that match at Ibrox, Gözübüyük also issued six yellows as Porto beat Lazio 2-1 in February.

The official has not issued a red card since November, though. And West Ham need to make sure they do not give him any reason to change that statistic.
