West Ham United are allegedly lining up a £12 million bid for Sheffield United defender John Egan in the January transfer window.

That’s according to a report from The Sun who claim that Egan was a top target for Hammers boss David Moyes in the summer, but Sheffield United refused to sell the 29-year-old.

West Ham were thought to be scouting the Blades defender heavily before the summer transfer window even opened.

Moyes ended up strengthening his defensive ranks with the additions of Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer in the summer.

Craig Dawson is allegedly keen to leave the London Stadium though, and with Angelo Ogbonna now on the wrong side of 34, the addition of another central defender may well be needed.

And it seems as though that’s exactly what Moyes is planning to do in January…

West Ham eyeing John Egan swoop

According to a report from The Sun, the Hammers WILL make a £12 million bid for the Sheffield United defender in the January transfer window.

Moyes clearly wants to bolster his centre-back ranks at the London Stadium midway through the season.

The 26-capped Republic of Ireland international is a very solid defender.

In 48 Championship appearances for Sheffield United last season (including the play-offs), Egan averaged one tackle, 1.1 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game. He also won 4.3 aerial duels per match during those outings (Who Scored).

The 29-year-old made 56.5 passes on average per match and recorded an impressive completion rate of 80.1% (Who Scored).

Egan is obviously a solid, reliable and extremely professional player. We have to say though, surely if West Ham harbour genuine ambitions to progress to the next level, Moyes should be targeting more high-profile targets than Championship journeyman Egan.

John Egan wouldn’t be a bad addition for West Ham, but we believe that Moyes should be setting his sights a lot higher than the Irishman.
