West Ham could replace Issa Diop with Sheffield United centre-back John Egan in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to a report from The Sun who claims that the Hammers’ recruitment staff have performed extensive scouting missions on the 29-year-old Blades defender.

And it seems as though Issa Diop’s days at the London Stadium could be numbered.

Signed from Toulouse for around £23 million back in the summer of 2018 (The Telegraph), the 25-year-old made an instant impact for West Ham.

Unfortunately for him though, he has regressed badly over the past two years.

And as a result, David Moyes may try to move him on from the London Stadium before the start of next season.

West Ham could replace Issa Diop in the summer window

According to a report from The Sun, Sheffield United centre-back John Egan is firmly on the Hammers’ radar ahead of the summer.

West Ham scouts have been keeping a very close eye on the 21-capped Republic of Ireland international.

Moyes is keen to bring the 29-year-old defender to the London Stadium as a potential replacement for Diop, should he decide to move the former Toulouse man on.

Egan is a very solid central defender.

In 36 Championship appearances for Sheffield United so far this season, the 29-year-old has averaged one tackle, 1.1 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game. He has also won 4.3 aerial duels per match during those outings (Who Scored).

The 29-year-old has made 58.4 passes on average per match and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 82.1% (Who Scored).

He is still under contract at Bramall Lane until 2024, so West Ham will have to make a decent offer in order to tempt the Blades into selling the Irishman.

Whether Egan would be an upgrade on Diop, however, is debatable.

Surely if West Ham are to upgrade in the centre-back department we should be eyeing a more high-profile target rather than Championship journeyman Egan.
