The Georgia international has an £88 million release clause, but Valencia might have to sell him for a lot less than that due to their current financial problems.

In spite of that, West Ham may well have still struggled to afford the Valencia stopper. And now our hopes of signing him have been dashed even more so with the news that big spending Chelsea have entered the race for his signature…

It seems as though the Hammers will have our work cut out if we are to sign the highly-rated goalkeeper this summer.

Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to suggest that moneybags Chelsea are monitoring the goalkeeper’s development:

Chelsea beating us to the Georgian would be a really big blow for the club in my opinion.

Mamardashvili is a very good goalkeeper. He has conceded 62 goals in 54 games for Valencia and has kept 16 clean sheets in the process (Transfermarkt).

Not bad for a goalkeeper playing for a team currently sitting just outside the relegation zone in La Liga eh!

Standing at 6ft 6in tall, the Valencia ace cuts an imposing figure. He’s a great shot-stopper and commands his penalty area with authority – as you would expect for someone so tall.

At just 22, the Valencia ace has a good 15 years left ahead of him playing at the highest level.

Unfortunately for us though, it seems as though Chelsea will be better placed than us to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.
