Flynn Downes was exceptional for West Ham against Gent in the Europa Conference League tonight.
West Ham took on Gent in the Europa Conference League and Flynn Downes was handed a much deserved start.

David Moyes has preferred Tomas Soucek to the 24-year-old all season long in the Premier League, aside from the odd occasion.

Downes’ stunning performance tonight really did send a big message to Moyes. The Brentwood-born midfielder’s display made the Scot look a bit silly, what with his continual use of Soucek this season.
The former Swansea City ace has to play every single week for the Hammers between now and the end of the season as far as I’m concerned…
Flynn Downes was superb for West Ham against Gent
The 24-year-old was at the heart of everything good that the Hammers did against the Belgians tonight.
Downes is on another level to Soucek when it comes to receiving the ball on the back foot and then picking out the correct pass.
He’s more energetic and dynamic than Soucek and his technical ability is on another level to the Czech’s.
Surely Moyes can’t watch that performance from Downes tonight and think that starting Soucek for the remainder of the Premier League campaign is the right way to go.

The hard-working central midfielder was tenacious in the tackle, persistent in the press and gave West Ham real control in the middle of the park against Gent.
He was superb at breaking up play, especially at one point in the second-half when he put in a superb tackle on Gent danger man Gift Orban, with the striker bearing down on goal.
Downes has absolutely everything that Moyes usually looks for in a player. So the fact that the 24-year-old has hardly played this season in the Premier League really is strange.
The Scot surely now realises that he has been getting it wrong all along with his preference of starting Soucek over Downes.
Hopefully Moyes atones for that between now and the end of the season.
