Sporting tell West Ham exactly what fee is needed to sign Marcus Edwards

West Ham united will have to spend big in January, if we are to sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting Lisbon.

Marcus Edwards is apparently firmly on the West Ham radar in the January transfer window, and he has been heavily linked with a Premier League return over the past few months.

Hammers boss David Moyes is frantically looking for attacking reinforcements, with Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta currently out injured, and Mohammed Kudus away at AFCON with Ghana.

None of those players are expected to be back and available for selection until at least the middle of next month.

That will obviously be problematic for West Ham, and Moyes seems intent on bolstering his ranks before our next Premier League game on January 21st.

However, any move for Edwards will be incredibly difficult now…

Sporting tell West Ham what fee is needed to sign Marcus Edwards

The Portuguese outfit are not prepared to let the former Tottenham winger leave on the cheap this month it seems.

According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Edwards has a €60 million (£51 million) release clause inserted into his current contract, and Sporting won’t let him leave for any less than that.

The Hammers obviously won’t be paying anything like that for a new signing in the January window, so it will very much be a case of on to the next one for Moyes.

That’s a shame because I think that Edwards would have been a great player for us.

Edwards left Spurs on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 and joined Vitória Guimarães, where he bagged 20 goals and 14 assists in 96 games (Transfermarkt).

He then went on to join Sporting in January 2022, and he’s been hugely impressive for the Portuguese giants.

The 25-year-old Enfield-born winger has 21 goals and 22 assists to his name in 91 games for Sporting (Transfermarkt).

Marcus Edwards is a left-footed right winger who has pace to burn and is brilliant technically. He has an eye for goal and regularly contributes with assists as well.

Unfortunately for West Ham though, Marcus Edwards definitely won’t be joining us in the January transfer window. Maybe we’ll make a move for him in the summer.
