Saudi clubs enter the race to sign 26-year-old in big January window blow for West Ham United.
West Ham United could miss out to a Saudi Pro League club in the race to sign a key David Moyes target in the January transfer window.
According to a report from Voetbal Primeur, interest from Saudi Arabia is emerging in Hammers target Steven Bergwijn – a player who is allegedly open to the idea of moving to the London Stadium.
The 26-year-old has been in fine form for Ajax this season, and with Moyes’s current front-line decimated by injuries, a move to sign the Dutchman would certainly make sense.
However, West Ham will clearly now face a real battle in the race to sign the former Tottenham Hotspur attacker.
That’s because mega-rich Saudi clubs are knocking on the door at Ajax for Bergwijn…

West Ham face big Saudi battle for Steven Bergwijn signing
Voetbal Primeur reckon that numerous clubs from the Middle East have taken an interest in signing the Ajax star in January.
That’s obviously really bad news for the Hammers, given the immense wealth that Saudi clubs possess. And if we miss out on him, it would be a big blow for us as far as I’m concerned.
I think that signing the Netherlands international should be a no-brainer for West Ham – he’d be absolutely perfect for us.
He possesses blistering pace, has a real low centre of gravity and can play anywhere along the front-line.
During his time with Tottenham, the 26-year-old bagged just eight goals and 10 assists in 83 games, but he’s faired far better with Ajax, with 24 goals and 10 assists to his name in just 66 outings (Transfermarkt).
He’s apparently available for around £27 million in January (Voetbal International) – an absolute bargain given the output he’d most likely bring to the Hammers.
Whether or not West Ham are able to fend off competition from Saudi Arabia this winter remains to be seen though.
