Journalist Jacob Steinberg has some much needed good news in a West Ham transfer update on a quality target.

West Ham ended 2023 in supreme style with that win at Arsenal.

But it’s fair to say it hasn’t been the best of starts to the new year for the Hammers or David Moyes.

AFCON has robbed West Ham of Mohammed Kudus until next month and injuries are starting to pile up.

It has showed in two uninspiring West Ham home performances and results to kick off 2024. And now yet another game has been added to the club’s heavy fixture load.

The drab 0-0 draw against Brighton was followed up by the 1-1 tie with Championship Bristol City at the London Stadium which resulted in an FA Cup third replay set for next week.

The match came at a cost with the Hammers suffering four injuries to Lucas Paqueta, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jarrod Bowen and Vladimir Coufal.

All this off the back of Michail Antonio suffering a setback in training in the lead up to the game having been out since November.

Hammers in for the Kil-man

It’s hard for fans to know what to believe when the transfer rumour mill starts whirring.

But The Guardian’s Hammers supporting journalist has revealed that West Ham are indeed targeting brilliant Wolves captain Max Kilman this month.

With Nayef Aguerd looking increasingly likely to leave the club, Steinberg says Kilman is indeed the man West Ham want to replace him.

“West Ham will target the Wolves centre-back Max Kilman if they raise funds by selling Nayef Aguerd this month,” Steinberg states.

“David Moyes is keen to sign a new defender and is plotting a move for Kilman.

Aguerd out, Max in?

“The defender has been in fine form for Wolves and West Ham are aware that buying him will not be easy. Kilman signed a new five-year deal last summer and Wolves, who could demand at least £40m for the 26-year-old, would be reluctant to lose such a key player midway through the season.

“West Ham have not started this window with a huge budget and have made it clear that incomings will hinge on money raised through sales. But they have been tracking Kilman, with Moyes looking to make changes to his back four.”

With Thilo Kehrer shipped out to Monaco, the injury to Mavropanos and Kurt Zouma’s own injury and availability limitations, Kilaman would be a sensational capture.

A report earlier this week claimed Wolves will be open to selling Kilman if they received a bid of £40m.

And Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil gave the Hammers huge encouragement with comments he made this week.
