The Daily Mail has made a baffling new claim about a West Ham move for rapid striker Terem Moffi given what is at stake.

David Moyes admitted last week that he has changed his stance over January transfers and could be active in the window.

Besides their obvious goalscoring issues, Moyes may well have been forced into a rethink with almost all of West Ham’s relegation rivals already making a number of signings.

One thing is for certain West Ham need to start scoring more goals if they are to avoid a disastrous relegation.

Dropping into the Championship does not bear thinking about for West Ham.

It would cost the club at least £150m in revenue. And probably another £100m plus in player values with West Ham forced to sell all and sundry.

West Ham must win seven of their remaining 19 games to stay up. That is no easy task when you have only won four of your last 19 and worse still just 13 of your last 46 league matches.

Goals win games and the Hammers have scored a pathetic 15 of them in 19 league matches so far this season. The team is also sorely lacking pace – a key commodity in the Premier League.

So Moyes and the owners should be moving heaven and Earth to use the January window to get more goals in this team as soon as possible.

It has been claimed that West Ham’s board want to sign a striker for Moyes this month but that the manager rejected the offer.

Now The Daily Mail has made a baffling new claim about a West Ham move for rapid striker Terem Moffi given what is at stake.

It has been widely reported that West Ham are battling the likes of relegation rivals Southampton to sign Lorient star Moffi.

This is a man who knows where the goal is and is playing with confidence this season.

Moffi has scored 12 goals in 17 games this season – just three less than the entire West Ham team combined.

Most half decent strikers nowadays cost upwards of £35m.

But despite West Ham’s desperate need for goals in their very real battle against relegation, the club allegedly feel the £25m Lorient want for Moffi is ‘beyond their January budget’.

How can that be when West Ham stand to lose up to 10 times that amount if they drop come May?

The Daily Mail claimed overnight that “West Ham are unable to spend big after their hefty spree during the summer window, in which they forked out big money for the likes of Gianluca Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta”.

But £25m is not spending big when it comes to signing a striker. If anything in the modern market that could be a bargain – especially if it makes the difference in keeping West Ham up.
