Thomas Tuchel has suggested that Saul Niguez could switch positions for Chelsea against West Ham this afternoon.
And if that does happen, the Hammers will surely target the Chelsea loanee.
The 27-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day in the summer.
Chelsea have the option to make that deal permanent next summer for around £30 million (Sky Sports).
The Spaniard has really struggled to make an impact for the Blues though.
Saul has only made two Premier League starts for the Blues with one of those coming on Wednesday night against Watford. It appears as though he may have a completely different role to play against West Ham though.
Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea ace Saul Niguez could switch positions
The 27-year-old may well be used in an unfamiliar position by the Blues boss.
Tuchel was speaking to reporters and hinted that Saul could fill in at left wing-back after Ben Chilwell was ruled out for the long-term, as quoted by Football.London:
“I think that he could play in a wingback role for us. Even if we play in a dominant game, an offensive game because he is very strong in arriving in the opponents’ box. Very strong in finishing, he has good timing to arrive at the second post for the header. He sometimes does this in training which is why we think he could be a good fit and maybe in the next games we have to try because Chilly is out long-term and a lot of games are coming and we maybe cannot put every game on Marcos’ shoulders.”
As good a player as Saul is, if he starts at left wing-back, West Ham quite simply have to target the Spaniard.
Jarrod Bowen could have the Chelsea ace on toast if he is on top form.
The wing-back role is an extremely unfamiliar one for Saul. So his positional sense may well be off.
Tuchel suggesting that Chelsea ace Saul Niguez could play as a wing-back against the Hammers today proves how light the Blues are in that particular position.
They don’t have many weaknesses but if Saul starts there this afternoon, the West Ham players will surely be buoyed.
This is a huge game for both sides. David Moyes will undoubtedly get the boys well up for this one. We absolutely cannot afford to lose against Chelsea. And Saul starting out of position may well help us get the result we need.
