You won’t believe what Paul Merson has just said about Said Benrahma – it’s utterly bizarre

Paul Merson has made a really bizarre criticism of West Ham United ace Said Benrahma.

West Ham star Said Benrahma has actually been in fine form this season in general, but Paul Merson bizarrely criticised him yesterday afternoon on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

David Moyes brought the Algerian to the London Stadium from Brentford in October 2020 initially on loan, before making his move a permanent one just three months later for around £30 million (The Athletic).

The Scot has clearly never been a fan of Benrahma though, and unbelievably chose to criticise him rather than praise him after his superb performance for the Hammers against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night.

The 27-year-old has never really hit the heights expected of him at the London Stadium consistently. However, this season he has been one of our best performers, with 11 goals and five assists in 48 games to his name (Transfermarkt).

Benny was a key player for us last weekend against Manchester United, and scored the goal that won us the match. However, Merson decided to bash him for it rather than offer him any kind of praise whatsoever…

The well-renowned football pundit is a regular on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

And when discussing David De Gea’s poor form for Manchester United and the Spaniard’s error during our 1-0 win at the London Stadium last Sunday, Merson bizarrely chose to take a swipe at Benrahma as well (Sky Sports, Saturday May 13th, 2:55pm):

“The lad should get booked for shooting, I mean the shot is atrocious.”

What a baffling remark that is from the former Arsenal man.

Had Benrahma not taken the shot on, we wouldn’t have won the game – it really is as simple as that.

And although the 27-year-old didn’t strike the ball cleanly, it certainly wasn’t the worst hit in the world, and at least it was on target!

Paul Merson just says things for effect sometimes in my opinion, and he has certainly done that here with his comments on Said Benrahma.

Utter madness from the Sky Sports pundit.
