West Ham United owned Flynn Downes put in a man of the match performance for Southampton over the weekend.
Flynn Downes left West Ham in the summer to join Southampton on a season-long loan, and Saints boss Russell Martin has already described the 24-year-old as ‘outstanding’ and ‘monstrous’.

Downes joined the Hammers from Swansea City in the summer of 2022 for around £14 million (Wales Online), but he didn’t get too many chances to shine under David Moyes last season.
Whenever the midfielder did get a chance, he impressed, although I will say that he needs to add more progressive passes to his game if he is to succeed in the Premier League.
That said, he seems to be loving life with Southampton in the Championship, and in fairness to him, he can’t do much more than he is currently doing…

The tenacious tacking midfielder was voted as the Man of the Match by the Southampton supporters for his performance during their 3-1 win over Birmingham City at St Mary’s.
He put in a terrific all-around display and dictated the tempo of the game for the home side.
Downes has all of the tools needed to play for a team like Southampton in England’s second tier. He sits in front of the back four and mops up everything that comes his way.
However the jury is still very much out on whether he is actually good enough to play for a top tier Premier League side.
We saw that he lacked that little bit of quality when playing for the Hammers last season, but in all honesty, it’s not really his job to create and instigate attacking patterns of play is it?
Flynn Downes didn’t really do much wrong for West Ham last season, and he seems to have reached a new level entirely this term with the Saints.
The question remains though: Is he good enough to succeed with West Ham in the top flight? The jury remains very much out on that one.
