However, Hammers boss David Moyes now appears to be close to signing the 28-year-old in a straight £30 million cash deal (Daily Mail).
That doesn’t mean that Downes won’t be heading down to the south coast though…
David Moyes trying to force Flynn Downes out of West Ham permanently
Southampton want to sign the 24-year-old on a season-long loan but the Hammers want to sell him permanently, according to a report from The Times.
Signed for £14 million from Swansea in the summer of 2022 (Wales Online), the 24-year-old midfielder was slowly eased into action by Moyes.
However, Downes was never given a consistent run of games, and that seemed strange to me. I thought he was easily good enough to warrant an extended run in the team.

Described as a ‘brilliant’ player by The 72, Downes has impressed every time he’s pulled on a West Ham shirt.
West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes is a tenacious tackler and is very composed in possession.
Moyes clearly isn’t a huge fan of the Brentwood-born ace though. The Scot sees him every day in training so we will have to trust his judgement with this one.
It would be a shame to see Downes leave. However, if that does end up happening, I would like to see Moyes bring in another midfielder on top of Edson Alvarez and Ward-Prowse.
