Flynn Downes is clearly loving life and excelling with Southampton after his loan exit from West Ham United.

West Ham allowed Flynn Downes to join Southampton on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window.

Downes never got enough starts last season, and he certainly wasn’t handed the chance to really prove himself.

However, he seems to be flourishing back in the Championship with Southampton. So is that really Downes’ level? Or is he someone who Moyes should have used more last term?

The Saints won 1-0 against Stoke City this weekend just gone.

And Southampton boss Russell Martin absolutely raved about Downes’ contribution, as quoted by the Daily Echo:

“In transition, we were really good. Flynn was monstrous today and it has been the Flynn we know in the last two games. He’s been outstanding.”

I will be really interesting to see whether Downes is handed a second chance at the London Stadium.

It kind of feels like he isn’t quite good enough for the Premier League, as harsh as that might sound.

The tenacious, tough-tackling midfielder is built perfectly for the aggressive and robust nature of Championship football. However, the signs last season were that he lacks the guile and technical ability to succeed at the very highest level in the Premier League.

And I would not be surprised one little bit if Flynn Downes leaves West Ham permanently to join Southampton, or another Championship club for that matter, next summer.

He may well be flourishing with the Saints, but that means absolutely nothing as far as his West Ham future is concerned, in my opinion. The Premier League is a completely different animal to the Championship, and that is not debatable.
