September 3rd, 2022: Specific incident was a sliding doors moment for under-fire West Ham player Maxwel Cornet

Maxwel Cornet has really struggled to establish himself with West Ham United since moving to East London 14 months ago.

West Ham signed Maxwel Cornet on a five-year deal from Burnley in the summer of 2022 for around £17.5 million (Sky Sports).

Hammers boss David Moyes brought the 27-year-old to the London Stadium to add some much needed pace and directness to our front-line, and to provide cover in the left wing-back.

However, things have not worked out for the 30-capped Ivory Coast international one little bit.

Moyes actually tried to sell him on deadline day this summer just gone, but a move to Everton failed to materialise.

Whether it’s too late for Cornet to turn things around is debatable. However, I firmly believe there was one moment early on in his West Ham career that could have changed everything…

Maxwel Cornet’s sliding doors moment for West Ham

On September 3rd, 2022 the Hammers travelled to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

With the Blues leading 2-1 with just a couple of minutes still to play, Cornet fired the ball into the top corner with what was a brilliantly taken goal. However, the strike was ludicrously ruled out after Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have fouled Edouard Mendy in the build-up.

It was a ridiculous decision that was later proved to be incorrect, and it had huge ramifications for both West Ham and Cornet.

Had that goal been correctly awarded, the former Burnley man would have been flying high on confidence, but it wasn’t to be.

And then just four weeks later, he suffered an injury that kept him out of action for five months.

The former Burnley man has made just 15 appearances for the Hammers since he returned from that injury in March 2023. That’s bad enough in itself but during those outings, he has been given a total of just 285 minutes by Moyes – an average of only 19 minutes per match (Transfermarkt).

Since that fateful day in west London, Maxwel Cornet has not displayed the explosiveness, strength and finishing ability that he showed at Stamford Bridge.

Things really could have been so very different had the officials made the correct decision that day.
