West Ham make stunning Federico Chiesa move, but there’s one very big problem

Federico Chiesa being linked with a move to West Ham United really is the stuff of dreams.

It would be easy to brush off the Italian’s name being linked with a West Ham switch as nothing more than pure fantasy.

However, we seem to be acting like a proper outfit these days with Julen Lopetegui at the helm, and the Spaniard is clearly desperate to bolster his forward ranks at the London Stadium this summer.

The Hammers have already been linked with some hugely ambitious moves this summer, with Karim Adeyemi the latest name to appear on our radar.

Now Italian superstar Chiesa is said to be Lopetegui’s latest transfer target.

The Juventus star can play anywhere along the front-line, possesses exceptional technical ability, is absolutely rapid and has a lethal shot.

So could he really join West Ham? There appears to be one major problem stopping the potential move, but I’m not buying it…

West Ham make stunning Federico Chiesa move

The Hammers signing someone like Chiesa just seems like an impossible dream right now, especially considering the fact that we can’t offer him European football.

However, a report out in Italy is claiming that West Ham were very much in for the supremely talented forward.

As always seems to be the case though, the Hammers apparently face a big problem.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (print edition July 30th, page 31), West Ham have been in talks about potentially signing the Juventus star this summer.

However, the Hammers face a very big issue indeed, supposedly so.

According to the Italian newspaper, West Ham are balking at Chiesa’s £80k-a-week wage demands, and as a result, have distanced themselves from negotiations with the Italian.

I have to question the veracity of those claims. In the modern era, £80k-a-week isn’t that much money, especially for elite attacking players.

So I’m just not sure that West Ham would have been put off by those wage demands – he’s available for just £21 million as well (Yahoo)!

The only other explanation is that Federico Chiesa is asking for that salary from West Ham AFTER tax. Paying him £160k-a-week would obviously then become problematic for the Hammers.

In my opinion, the Italian Euro 2020 winner is an incredibly unrealistic target anywhere, and he’ll probably end up somewhere like Arsenal, Tottenham or Chelsea.

I do expect Lopetegui to sign a versatile forward, but there’s no chance Chiesa will be coming to the London Stadium this summer in my opinion.
