West Ham European record lasts just 32 days

West Ham United set a new European record record earlier this season, but it hasn’t lasted long unfortunately.

David Moyes guided his West Ham side to a 2-1 win away at Freiburg in the Europa League, and in doing so stretched our unbeaten run in European competition to 17 games – a new record…at the time.

It was a fantastic achievement from the Hammers, considering some of the great European sides that have come and gone over the past century.

However, that record ended when Olympiacos beat us 2-1 out in Greece a fortnight ago.

Moyes has received huge criticism in recent weeks, and reports have claimed that he is dangerously close to losing his job.

However, he will always deserve huge respect for guiding us to our first major trophy since 1980 last season, and overseeing a 17-game unbeaten European run.

That record no longer stands though…

West Ham European record over

Last night, Manchester City beat Young Boys 3-0 at the Etihad in the Champions League, and in doing so, Pep Guardiola’s side stretched their unbeaten run in European competition to 18 games.

They equalled the record two weeks ago when they beat Young Boys 3-1 away from home.

They went 13 games unbeaten in the Champions League last season, won the Super Cup this term, and have now gone four games unbeaten in the 2023/24 group stage.

It was good while it lasted eh! The defeat to Olympiacos two weeks ago is even harder to take now.

I guess the only thing we can do now is get back on the horse and embark on a new run. Whether we will ever challenge Man City’s record again is highly unlikely though.

Guardiola’s men don’t look like losing right now do they! Meanwhile, the Hammers seem to be extremely susceptible to defeat.

West Ham United’s European record was a truly superb achievement for a club like us. It’s just such a shame that it lasted only 32 days!
