Top 6 door left wide open for West Ham after major double boost despite David Moyes claim

The door to the top 6 has been left wide open for West Ham after a major double boost despite a claim from David Moyes.

Nobody likes a know it all but on this occasion Hammers News is delighted to say ‘I told you so’.

After all the doom and gloom in the wake of West Ham’s frustrating draw with Palace last weekend, we wanted to try and look on the bright side on Monday.

We pointed out the major positives for West Ham ahead of what we billed potentially the biggest week of the season so far.

Here’s a reminder of what we said:

Whenever West Ham play bitter rivals Spurs, it’s always a big week. But the Hammers face three games in seven days which could shape the rest of the season and leave the club in a superb position. Beat Tottenham in their own back yard and West Ham could be just three points off fifth spot – which is rewarded with a Champions League place this season. That position could be consolidated with a positive result against Fulham – a very winnable game for the Hammers – on paper at least. Then comes the big final Europa League group game at home against Frieburg next Thursday night. A draw in that game will be enough to seal top spot and a place in the last 16 of European competition for a third consecutive season. That would also earn the Hammers a three-month break from European matches. Throw in the fact West Ham then have another winnable game against Wolves – at home – three days later and there is no reason why we can’t be sitting in the top six of the Premier League and last 16 of Europe in the next week or so.

Hammers News ahead of Spurs

Well it’s a case of so far, so very good for West Ham since.

Because the top 6 door has been left wide open for West Ham after a major double boost despite a David Moyes claim.

Top 6 door left wide open for West Ham

The Hammers boss has been doing his best to play things down.

The Scot told reporters ahead of the clash with Fulham that he doesn’t believe West Ham have the squad to get in the top six this season.

That’s despite West Ham making their best ever start to a Premier League season after 15 games.

We revealed things could be even better if it were not for a near league highest 12 dropped points. Having those back would have left the Hammers joint top after 15 games.

But while Moyes is – probably rightly – trying to keep a lid on expectations, the path has cleared for West Ham to jump into sixth on Sunday.

That’s after an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat for Manchester United against Bournemouth and Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Major double boost despite Moyes claim

Now if West Ham beat Fulham at Craven Cottage they will rise to sixth – level on points with fifth-placed Spurs as we predicted.

Then all eyes will be on the outcome of Tottenham’s home game against Newcastle. Defeat for the injury-ravaged Magpies would keep West Ham sixth.

At worst West Ham will be seventh and confident of building on it with a home game against Wolves to come next weekend.

Moyes’ boys have to do the job at Fulham first, though, of course.

Come On You Irons.
