West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez has just been compared to one of the true greats of international football.

Edson Alvarez joined West Ham from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer transfer window for around £34 million.

And it already seems like Hammers boss David Moyes has made an unbelievably good signing.

The West Ham manager recently raved about the Mexican, although he did admit that he’s still finding it hard to adjust to the physical nature of the Premier League.

That will come in time though, don’t worry about that. Alvarez has absolutely everything needed to succeed in England.

And the 25-year-old has just been given quite possibly the biggest compliment that a Mexican footballer could be given…

World Cup winner compares West Ham ace Edson Alvarez to legendary figure

Ricardo Antonio La Volpe won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978.

The 71-year-old was in charge of Mexican outfit Club de Football America S.A when Alvarez was coming through the ranks back in 2016.

La Volpe explained just how highly he rates the 25-year-old Hammer, as quoted by El Futbolero:

“I trained Rafa Marquez. The quality is in the player, and you need to help make that player shine, like I made Edson Alvarez shine. I worked with Rafa Marquez and then Edson Alvarez and I said, ‘This one is the same’. He came out playing for me, has good feet and good technique.”

Maquez racked up 147 international caps for Mexico. He was a central defender who could play as a defensive midfielder as well and played for the likes of Monaco and Barcelona throughout his long and distinguished career.

Meanwhile, Alvarez already has 70 international caps to his name, and at 25, he’s well on his way to beating Marquez’s tally. The former Barca defender is only third on the list of all-time caps for Mexico though. Andres Guardado leads with an unbelievable 179 caps to his name!

Eadson Alvarez is a truly superb player, and I think West Ham have secured a real bargain by signing him for just £34 million.

The comments from former World Cup winner Ricardo Antonio La Volpe prove just how highly rated his is worldwide as well.
