West Ham United star Said Benrahma has just made a truly mind-boggling claim about the London Stadium.

Said Benrahma moved to the London Stadium in October 2020 initially on loan from Brentford, and West Ham then made his move a permanent one for around £25 million in January 2021 (Goal).

The Algerian has spent more than three years playing at the London Stadium, so he will know all about the atmosphere, or lack of it should I say.

The Hammers were given a first hand lesson on what home support should look like out in Greece two weeks ago, and after the game David Moyes actually suggested that the West Ham home fans should take a leaf out of the Olympiacos supporters’ book when it comes to creating a good atmosphere.

However, Benrahma clearly thinks differently…

Said Benrahma has just made a baffling London Stadium claim

Firstly, the West Ham website suggests that Benrahma thinks the London Stadium can ‘match any noise made across Europe in any other venue’.

And then the Algerian himself suggested that opposition teams find it hard to deal with the atmosphere created by the fans inside our Stratford home, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“The fans will for sure be our twelfth man. When you come into London Stadium, you see how big it is and how passionate our fans are. For an away side, that can be a lot to take in. I can remember two years ago in the round of 16 match against Sevilla. The noise that day was amazing. And it has been for every European night we’ve played. When those fans are giving us their support and positivity, it pushes us to be even better and gives us more energy. They will help give us the power we need in this game.”

Please, give me a break! The London Stadium has failed to generate a good atmosphere on more than five occasions in seven years I would say.

Players from away teams struggling to take it in? Do me a favour Said! The Chelsea Carabao Cup game in 2016 springs to mind, as does the home win against Tottenham in 2017 and the Europa League victory over Sevilla in 2022.

Aside from that, the place is like a morgue during the majority of our home games. It’s absolutely nothing like Upton Park, we just have to accept that.

The onus should be on the manager and the players to give the fans something to shout about, but we can be guilty at times of just sitting around and waiting for that to happen as well.

Said Benrahma’s comments on the London Stadium were baffling to hear, and I’m sure that the vast majority of West Ham fans will agree with me.
