Mail man Chris Sutton says things could turn ugly at West Ham but has firm belief that will come as a big relief to fans.

West Ham are in the thick of the tightest Premier League relegation battle for years.

Just four points separate the nine clubs from 12th to 20th with West Ham vs Southampton one of three massive relegation six-pointers this weekend.

It is the least amount of points between the teams 12th and 20th at this stage of the season in Premier League history.

Football data experts Opta recently published a percentage calculation on the chances of each of the survival rivals being relegated. And they stated the Hammers and Leicester were the least likely to the nine to drop.

Data specialists Nielsen’s Gracenote teamed up with BBC Sport to produce something similar and concurred with the findings on West Ham’s chances of relegation.

But these statistical analyses do not take into account intangible factors such as the atmosphere within the team and fans.

So with speculation swirling about David Moyes and claims there is a toxic atmosphere in the dressing room, fans are understandably concerned the Hammers might be destined for disaster.

Now Mail man Chris Sutton says things could turn ugly at West Ham but he has a firm belief that will come as a big relief to fans.

Speaking in a ‘bottom of the table worryometer’ feature, Sutton thinks things could get messy at underachieving West Ham.

But he is still confident West Ham will stay up this season.

“David Moyes is probably sick of hearing how close he is to the sack,” Sutton says in the Mail.

“One loss can be the end of you and West Ham’s next game against Southampton is as big as they come. Moyes knows the pressure he is under.

“Third bottom in the Premier League, West Ham are another team who cannot buy a win away from home. They have been relying on the London Stadium, but the atmosphere could turn ugly if they lose to Southampton. Still, I expect West Ham to survive.”

Let’s hope those last seven words are correct come what May.
