Michail Antonio is currently out after picking up an injury on international duty, and the West Ham United striker is expected back to action in just a couple of weeks.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio was representing Jamaica 12 days ago during their international clash with Canada, but he lasted just 21 minutes before hobbling off the field with a knee problem.

The Hammers hitman was expected to be out for quite some time with knee ligament damage, with one report claiming that the 33-year-old could be set to miss nine months of action.

Other reports suggested that he could be on the sidelines for three months, but David Moyes told reporters on Friday that he expects Antonio to be for only two-three weeks (WHUFC.com).

That seems liked a rather optimistic prediction from the Scot, and the latest info from one of the experts in the field of sports injuries still gives us slight cause for concern…

Contradictory Michail Antonio injury claim made

Dr Rajpal Brar – a sports scientist and a specialist in physical therapy – spoke exclusively to West Ham Zone about Antonio’s current injury.

And he speculated that this kind of injury could keep a player out for three months:

The concerns are for ligament damage so if it is three months that would typically mean ligament rupture and potentially fractures as well. The club will have to be extremely methodical with his return. However, from what Moyes has said and if that is indeed the case, then it looks like a few weeks out instead of months.

Let’s hope that Moyes is right. Despite Antonio’s poor form this season, he’s still much more useful than Danny Ings, and we’ll need him over the course of the next month or so, with fixtures coming thick and fast.

The 33-year-old has clearly regressed badly over the past 12 months, and I wouldn’t be surprised one little bit of he left the London Stadium in the summer.

However, he will still have a role to play for West Ham between now and the end of the season. So I’m hoping that the injury sustained by Michail Antonio isn’t serious, and he is back in just a couple of weeks like Moyes said he would be.
