Glenn Hoddle has absolutely nailed the big Tomas Soucek problem with 18 simple words this afternoon.

Tomas Soucek has been really poor for West Ham United over the last 18 months, although Glenn Hoddle highlighted something today that explains why that might be.

The 28-year-old did score against Crystal Palace today, and he bagged two assists as well.

However, the Czech Republic’s overall performance against the Eagles was shocking in my opinion. The error that he made for Palace’s third goal was unforgivable.

I understand why Moyes starts Soucek every single week – he’s an absolute monster in the air. However, the former Slavia Prague man really does hold us back as a team from a footballing perspective.

Having said that, it was nice to see him back on the scoresheet today…

Hoddle was on the BT Sport co-comms this afternoon and delivered his verdict on Soucek, after the West Ham man opened the scoring against Palace (Saturday April 29th, 12:55pm):

“I don’t think he’s arriving in the penalty area as much as he was when he first arrived.”

Hoddle is absolutely spot on there.

During Soucek’s first season with West Ham, he made a living out of arriving late in the penalty area, and bagged 10 league goals as a result.

For some reason though, David Moyes swapped Soucek and Declan Rice’s roles around at the start of the 2021/22 season – an experiment that has failed miserably.

Soucek’s goal today will be a huge boost to him and was a timely reminder to Moyes that he is incredibly useful when in and around the six-yard box.

The 28-year-old is a terrible passer of the football and is absolutely shocking when in possession, so why on earth Moyes thinks its a good idea to play him in a deeper role is absolutely baffling.

Hoddle noticed why Soucek has been struggling to replicate his form from the 2020/21 season. So surely Moyes can see that as well.
