Does a big Jose Mourinho development move the goalposts for West Ham United over a new deal for manager David Moyes?

That’s the question on the lips of many West Ham fans and observers right now.

David Moyes‘ future at West Ham has been the subject of much speculation and debate over the last 18 months.

It was claimed last month that Moyes had told friends he would be leaving West Ham when his contract expires at the end of the season.

But the manager publicly denied those claims. And following the win at Arsenal after Christmas, there was a clamour for the Scot to be handed a new deal.

It was then claimed that Moyes will be handed a new two-and-a-half year deal when he meets with majority owner David Sullivan at the end of January.

Does big Mourinho development move the goalposts for West Ham?

Many outside the Hammers bubble are confused by the speculation surrounding Moyes’ future.

That’s understandable given he led West Ham to a first major trophy in 43 years just over six months ago and has them challenging for the Premier League top six again as well as in the last 16 of European football for a third consecutive season.

But a section of West Ham fans believe the club needs to hold off handing Moyes a new deal. And it is felt by some that the owners needs to go in a different direction in the summer.

So does a big Jose Mourinho development move the goalposts for West Ham over the Moyes deal?

Back in October Football Insider claimed Mourinho could replace Moyes in the Hammers hotseat when he leaves Roma.

Sacking sparks debate

It was not the first time that Mourinho, 60, had been linked with the West Ham manager’s job either.

The Hammers owners were allegedly eyeing him up to replace Moyes during the dark days of last season.

On the face of it, there would undoubtedly be concerns about the drama and circus Mourinho brings. And some would argue his style of football is no better than that of Moyes.

On the other hand Mourinho is a serial winner, a record he continued with Roma – lifting the Europa Conference League before then leading them to the Europa League final.

And there is simply no comparison between the CVs of Moyes and Mourinho. Moyes has admitted as much himself, often lauding Mourinho as one of the managers he looks up to the most. The Portuguese can also be box office and brings strong connections and pull in the transfer market.

Breaking news emerged yesterday that the self-proclaimed “Special One” had been sacked by Roma.

Would it be worth the risk?

So does that change the landscape for the Hammers?

Given the previous links and Moyes’ uncertain future, it is certainly a question that’s being asked. Especially as many had cited the lack of quality managers available on the market when arguing against Moyes being replaced.

A debate on talkSPORT Drive in the wake of the news suggested West Ham, Chelsea and Newcastle would be the most likely Premier League destinations should Mourinho return to England.

Opinion will undoubtedly be divided.

West Ham might get a Mourinho determined to restore his reputation after indifferent stints at Spurs and Man United.

But would it really be a risk worth taking given the stability Moyes has brought to the London Stadium?

It’s certainly something to consider for Hammers fans and the owners as we head into the second half of the campaign with Moyes’ future – for now at least – still unclear.
