BBC London Stadium attendance claim could get West Ham in hot water due to capacity limit

A claim from the BBC about the London Stadium attendance yesterday apparently could get West Ham in hot water with Newham council, due to capacity limits.

West Ham played host to Manchester United in the Premier League yesterday afternoon, and the London Stadium attendance was a sell-out yet again.

The Hammers are behind only Manchester United in the Premier League when it comes to average attendances this season, although the atmosphere generated inside our London home has been criticised heavily, most recently just yesterday by Joe Cole.

However, it must be said that the home fans were in full voice during the final 20 minutes of the match, after David Moyes made a tactical tweak that transformed us into a far more threatening attacking outfit.

The atmosphere during the final quarter of the game proved that we are capable of making the London Stadium a very tough place to come for visiting teams.

The capacity is currently 62,500 for West Ham games, and we are hoping to soon increase that number to 68,000.

It was obviously a full house for the game against Man United yesterday, but what was the exact number?

London Stadium capacity claim made

Sean Whetstone, a reporter very close to David Sullivan, has questioned the BBC’s attendance claim for yesterday’s match.

BBC Sport claim that 64 odd thousand people were in attendance at the London Stadium for the game yesterday.

However, Whetstone has contested those numbers, outlining how the arena is only licensed to hold 62,500 for football games with Newham Council:

That is actually a very interesting point by Whetstone, and it would be a big concern if we have breached the attendance agreement.

I’m 100% positive West Ham would not be breaking license agreements with Newham council. I wonder whether the BBC’s figure includes players and staff from both teams inside the stadium on the day?

The West Ham capacity is already one of the biggest in England, and the world for that matter. It’s set to get even bigger soon, with a 68,000 capacity on the way at the London Stadium.

The attendance yesterday was just under 62,500 according to Whetstone though, in spite of what the BBC may be claiming.
