£19 million star saved his West Ham career with performance against Chelsea

West Ham United had a fairly quiet January transfer window in the end.

Graham Potter signed Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton and brought James Ward-Prowse back to West Ham from his failed loan spell with Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Maxwel Cornet left the London Stadium to link up with Genoa on loan.

However, a lot more players could have come into the club, and a lot more could have left as well.

Potter is said to be planning a big overhaul of his squad in the summer.

The Hammers head coach certainly has a lot of work to do if he is to adequately clean up the mess left behind by Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten.

One of Steidten’s most controversial signings could have actually left the club last month, but a last-minute twist of fate ensured that he stayed put.

Luis Guilherme saved West Ham career with Chelsea performance

The Hammers signed Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras in the summer of 2024 for around £20 million, with £5 million worth of potential add-ons.

However, he has barely featured for West Ham this season – just 55 minutes of football in fact (Transfermarkt).

Luis Guilherme was being heavily tipped to leave West Ham on deadline day last month, but he remained with the Hammers in the end.

So what does his future actually hold?

Claret and Hugh claim that West Ham rejected two bids for the 19-year-old in the January window and on into February from Brazilian side Flamengo.

It is claimed that Flamengo first offered a straight £19.7 million fee for Guilherme, and then a £4.3 million loan fee for him.

However, Graham Potter blocked the deal after the former Palmeiras winger’s impressive cameo performance against Chelsea on February 3rd (deadline day).

Guilherme was actually pretty poor when he first came on against the Blues, but salvaged his display with impressive drive and determination during the final five minutes of the game.

It was claimed last month that West Ham were willing to sell Luis Guilherme for £19 million.

However, his performance against Chelsea clearly saved his West Ham career.

What Julen Lopetegui really thought of Luis Guilherme signing

It was Tim Steidten who masterminded the deal to bring Guilherme to the London Stadium in the summer of 2024.

However, it seemed like Julen Lopetegui never had any real intentions of playing him regularly.

The signing of the teenager allegedly raised eyebrows amongst the Hammers hierarchy.

And it was suggested that the Luis Guilherme signing caused real friction between Steidten and Lopetegui at West Ham.

That’s because Lopetegui wanted the club to go all out to sign a top-class striker instead – someone like Jhon Duran.

I have to say, I make the Spaniard right there. However, what’s done is done now.

And all West Ham can hope for now is that Luis Guilherme comes good at some point in the future.
