Awful West Ham player proves why Moyes hardly starts him after FA Cup shocker v Bristol City

West Ham United found it tough going against Bristol City in the FA Cup third round replay at Ashton Gate tonight.

David Moyes was forced into fielding a makeshift West Ham side against Bristol City in the FA Cup, with the entire West Ham front-line unavailable for selection.

The Hammers trailed 1-0 at the break, and it was a really poor performance all around from everyone involved.

Things then went from bad to worse for West Ham early on in the second-half when Said Benrahma was sent off after a petulant kick out that summed up his dismal 2023/24 campaign in a nutshell.

We crashed out of the cup in the end without any kind of fight. If truth be told, we didn’t lay a glove on Bristol City.

One player in particular who failed to produce the goods was Maxwel Cornet – a player who the Hammers are allegedly prepared to sell for just £6 million in the January transfer window.

So with that in mind, tonight was a real chance for him to prove a point to Moyes – one that he completely failed to grasp…

West Ham ace was awful against Bristol City in the FA Cup

Cornet played his part in the calamitous goal that we conceded inside three minutes tonight.

The 27-year-old had the chance to play a fairly simple though ball to Danny Ings – one that he hopelessly overhit and allowed Robins stopper Max O’Leary to clear upfield before Tommy Conway went on to score, after a horrendous error from Konstantinos Mavropanos.

After that mistake, Cornet then missed an absolute sitter up the other end. He had another good chance not long after when he just wasn’t quick enough to meet a ball whipped in by Emerson Palmieri.

Every time the ball was played into him it bounced back off him and didn’t stick. The Ivorian failed to offer any kind of threat in behind either.

Here’s the kicker though – I don’t think he’s entirely to blame. Cornet has made just seven starts since joining the Hammers in 2022, and he has just one start to his name this season (Soccerbase).

How can he be expected to build any kind of momentum or find any kind of rhythm when he hardly ever plays?

Don’t get me wrong, Maxwel Cornet wasn’t anywhere near good enough for West Ham against Bristol City int he FA Cup tonight.

However, Moyes hasn’t given him the platform needed to succeed at the London Stadium. I fully expect him to leave this month, or in the summer transfer window at the very latest.
