Former Hammer Rio Ferdinand revealed he has regular private conversations with Declan Rice and that will surely worry West Ham.

Former West Ham hero Ferdinand has sullied his name with some Hammers fans with his actions regarding Rice in recent times.

West Ham fans have fond memories of a young Ferdinand emerging through the academy and into the first team.

The elegant former centre-back starred for West Ham and went on to become – at one stage – the world’s best defender.

Ferdinand always has lots of good things to say about West Ham and the grounding the club gave him in the game.

But he has angered a large section of West Ham supporters on several occasions by pushing for Manchester United to sign Rice.

Indeed in the summer Ferdinand was labelled ‘totally disrespectful’ by some fans when he tagged Rice in on a post urging him to join Man United.

Ferdinand has also suggested on several occasions that Rice will need to leave West Ham for an elite level club like he did, despite then being involved in PAI Capital’s attempted takeover of the Hammers.

Therefore, what Rio said on BT Sport about his private conversations with Rice will surely worry West Ham.

What Rio Ferdinand said about his private conversations with Declan Rice will worry West Ham

Speaking on BT Sport’s coverage of West Ham’s 3-2 win over Chelsea, Rio revealed he regularly has private conversations with Rice.

“I think Joe (Cole) you speak to him quite a lot, I speak to him a fair bit as well myself and it’s always about football,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He’s  an absolute lover of the game. He’s not a kid who wants other stuff, he’s all about the game and in the clips there (showing Rice’s improvement and what he has added to his game) it epitomises what I’ve spoken to him about – adding new bits to his game constantly.

“He doesn’t want to stand still. He wants to be the best of the best and get the best out of himself.”

We want to give Rio the benefit of the doubt.

But the comments are a real concern given his previous very public statements over the midfield talisman leaving for a club like Man United.

Let’s hope Rice follows his own path and sticks around to lead West Ham into the Champions League.
