Issa Diop is nailed on to start for West Ham United against Lyon in the Europa League second-leg clash on Thursday night.

And it’s time for every single Hammers fan to get right behind the 25-year-old centre-back.

Diop has been a much-maligned figure at the London Stadium over the past 18 months or so.

The former Toulouse man’s form has nose-dived since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and he now seems like a shadow of the player who joined West Ham way back in the summer of 2018.

Whenever Diop has played this season, he has failed to impress aside from perhaps one performance away at Leicester in February.

With Kurt Zouma potentially out for the rest of the season though, and Angelo Ogbonna still out with an ACL injury, West Ham will have to rely on Diop over the next few weeks.

The 25-year-old will undoubtedly start for West Ham in our Europa League clash with Lyon tomorrow night. And the centre-back needs everyone’s support. When he puts the claret and blue on, there is no point slating him. Let’s all get behind him.

Diop could be a key man for the West Ham vs Lyon Europa League clash

The former Toulouse defender possesses all of the attributes needed to succeed at the very highest level of the game.

He has really struggled with his concentration, positioning and decision making in the past, however.

David Moyes clearly isn’t a huge fan of Diop and is allegedly prepared to sell him to Lyon, coincidentally, in the summer (Foot Mercato).

With Zouma having suffered an ankle problem though, Diop may well have one more chance to salvage his Hammers career.

And every single fan in that away section at the Groupama Stadium tomorrow night should be singing Diop’s name throughout the game.

His confidence must be rock-bottom as it is. The last thing that the centre-back needs is the fans getting on his back early doors if he makes a mistake or two.

As mentioned earlier, Diop has the ability to dominate attackers with his strength, pace and aerial prowess. We just don’t see it very often.

There’s no time like the present Issa. Go out there tomorrow and smash it.

The West Ham vs Lyon Europa League clash is the biggest game in our recent history. Hopefully we progress through to the semi-finals. To do that through, we will need Issa Diop to be on his very best form. COYI X
