West Ham United are reportedly contemplating a £10 million bid for one of England’s best young central defenders in January.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, West Ham manager David Moyes is eyeing a move to sign someone as an alternative to Piero Hincapie, with a January transfer window deal for the Bayer Leverkusen ace thought to be almost impossible.

Central defence is definitely an area where Hammers boss Moyes needs to strengthen further still with Angelo Ogbonna set to turn 36 in May.

Hincapie is someone who West Ham have been extensively linked with recently.

Another central defender on the Hammers’ radar is Ronnie Edwards, and Moyes apparently tried to bring him to the London Stadium in the summer.

Now it seems like the Scot could be set to go back in for the 20-year-old Peterborough United centre-back…

According to TEAMtalk, the Hammers are weighing up a £10 million January bid for the cultured League One defender.

I think that Edwards would be a superb long-term addition for West Ham.

Standing at 5ft 11in tall, he isn’t the tallest of central defenders but he possesses a great leap that more than makes up for relatively diminutive stature.

In 12 League One outings, Edwards has averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 3.8 clearances and 1.3 successful aerial duels per game (Who Scored).

The Peterborough defender is a very good passer of the football as well. He’s averaged 80.8 passes per game and has recorded a completion rate of 90.5% (Who Scored).

Peterborough Today describe the centre-back as an ‘incredible talent’.

Edwards has all the makings of a truly elite central defender, and I think he’d fit right in at West Ham.

The 20-year-old would improve hugely at the London Stadium under the guidance of David Moyes, and the chance to learn from players like Kurt Zouma and Konstantinos Mavropanos would be invaluable.
