West Ham United could make huge statement by signing Piero Hincapie in the January transfer window, and deal a big blow to Liverpool in the process.

The agent of Piero Hincapie is apparently in talks with Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window, but West Ham have now entered the race to sign the 21-year-old defender according to a report from Fussball Transfers.

Hammers boss David Moyes is clearly keen to sign a left-footed centre-back – perferably someone who can play as a left-back as well.

And with that in mind, Hincapie would be the perfect addition for West Ham. The 27-capped Ecuador international is a world-class player in the making and he ticks every single box when it comes to his suitability to the Premier League.

Signing him won’t be easy with Liverpool said to be in the race for his signature, but if Moyes manages to win the race for the Bayer Leverkusen ace, it really would be a huge statement from him, Tim Steidten and the club…

The Leverkusen defender would be the ideal long-term replacement for Angelo Ogbonna.

He has been labelled as the best young South American defender in world football.

In 30 Bundesliga outings last season, Hincapie averaged 1.7 tackles, one interception, 2.5 clearances and two successful aerial duels per game (Who Scored).

During those appearances, the Ecuadorian made 55.7 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 83.2% (Who Scored).

He could be available for just £25 million according to Calcio Mercato – an absolute bargain fee.

He is cool and composed under pressure for someone so young, is strong in the tackle, dominant in the air and possesses impressive pace for a central defender.

The mere fact that Liverpool are thought to be in talks with his agent proves just how good the Ecuadorian is.

And if West Ham manage to sign Piero Hincapie either in the January transfer window or next summer, it would be a monstrous statement from the club.
