West Ham star Angelo Ogbonna could be set for January exit with Dimitri Payet reunion on the cards

Angelo Ogbonna could be Marseille bound in January, with his West Ham contract set to expire in the summer of 2023.

That’s according to a report from La Gazzetta Express who claim that the 34-year-old centre-back could be set for a reunion with ex-Hammers Dimitri Payet at Marseille this winter.

Italian clubs Lecce and Frosinone have already been linked with moves to sign West Ham star Ogbonna on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

Ogbonna, who earns around £68k-a-week at the London Stadium (Salary Sport), joined the Hammers from Juventus in the summer of 2015 for around £8 million (Daily Mail).

Despite a slow start to life in East London, the Italian went on to quickly establish himself as a fan favourite amongst the fans from 2017 onwards.

It seems as though Oggy’s days in East London could be numbered though…

Angelo Ogbonna could leave West Ham for Marseille

La Gazzetta Express reckon that the Italian could be set for a reunion with his old Hammers teammate Dimitri Payet at Marseille in January.

I believe that getting rid of Ogbonna in January would be a big mistake from David Moyes.

We have already lost the leadership skills of Mark Noble from the dressing room, and Declan Rice could well depart the club next summer.

I strongly feel that Ogbonna should be handed a one-year contract extension, and then he will be able to be a key figure during the transition process that we are currently going through as a club all the way up to the summer of 2024.

Aside from all of that, he is still a very useful squad player for West Ham. He just seems to be such a good influence on the squad in my eyes.

Ogbonna is vital to this team, with his leadership and organisational skills. He is an absolute rock in the air and ensures that we are well set up as a team defensively.

The 34-year-old is essentially Moyes’s on-field lieutenant.

And I feel as though West Ham should keep Angelo Ogbonna around for at least another 18 months.
