West Ham make £15 million summer transfer window bid for English attacker

West Ham United have apparently lodged a formal bid to sign a Premier League winger in the summer transfer window.

Julen Lopetegui clearly needs to strengthen his ranks at West Ham before the start of the new campaign – he admitted as much after our pre-season defeat to Wolves.

The Hammers head coach has made three new signings this summer, but he needs four more as a bare minimum in my opinion.

Lopetegui must sign a new striker, a left winger, a central midfielder and another centre-back in my opinion, if West Ham are to be competitive on all fronts next season.

The addition of a centre-forward may well be his priority, but I think a new left winger is needed just as urgently.

And it seems as though Lopetegui is thinking along similar lines…

Lopetegui is quite clearly on the hunt for attacking reinforcements this summer.

And now the Hammers have made a formal move to sign someone from our Premier League rivals.

According to the Sunday Mirror (print edition July 28th, page 68), West Ham have now made a firm £15 million bid for Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson.

It was recently claimed that Nelson is keen to move to the London Stadium this summer.

Lopetegui is clearly targeting a right-footed attacker who’s capable of playing out wide on the left, in order to add more balance to his team.

The Hammers were actually linked with a move to sign Nelson last summer, when he was mooted to be part of a potential swap deal for Declan Rice.

He remained at the Emirates in the end but it seems as though the Hammers are back in for him now.

Nelson, 24, is a decent player on his day but I just feel like we should be setting our sights a lot higher than the Gunners forward.

Sure, he possesses impressive pace, but he doesn’t have much guile or creativity inside the final third. Eight goals and nine assists in 89 games for Arsenal tells its own story really doesn’t it.

The 24-year-old has a really concerning injury record as well.

Since the start of the 2019/20 season, Nelson has missed 333 days through injury (Transfermarkt).

The winger has hardly played over the past couple of years, and I just don’t think he’s the man we need to take us to the next level.

I would prefer it if West Ham signed another left winger in the summer transfer window – someone like Jota Silva or Steven Bergwijn would be far better additions for us in my opinion.
