West Ham United apparently have no interest in signing John Egan from Sheffield United in the January transfer window.

That’s according to club insiders Claret and Hugh who claim that the recent report suggesting that the 29-year-old is a target for the Hammers is ‘simply untrue’.

The Sun claimed late last night that West Ham WILL make a £12 million bid for John Egan in the January transfer window.

In fairness, we did highlight how the only way that a move to sign Egan would make sense would be if Craig Dawson was sold in January.

David Moyes has plenty of centre-back options at his disposal after all. And it seems as though there actually isn’t any truth to the Egan rumours anyway…

West Ham move for John Egan ruled out

Claret and Hugh reckon that there is no truth to the rumours that the Hammers want to sign the 29-year-old defender in January.

We have to say, we’re not unhappy about this.

The 26-capped Republic of Ireland international is a very solid defender.

In 48 Championship appearances for Sheffield United last season (including the play-offs), Egan averaged one tackle, 1.1 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game. He also won 4.3 aerial duels per match during those outings (Who Scored).

The 29-year-old made 56.5 passes on average per match and recorded an impressive completion rate of 80.1% (Who Scored).

Egan is obviously a solid, reliable and extremely professional player. We have to say though, surely if West Ham harbour genuine ambitions to progress to the next level, Moyes should be targeting more high-profile targets than Championship journeyman Egan.

John Egan wouldn’t be a bad addition for West Ham, but we believe that Moyes should be setting his sights a lot higher than the Irishman.

And thankfully, it seems as though the Scot is indeed doing just that.
