West Ham inside source denies new contract claims about 16-goal star Tomas Soucek after the latest round of media gossip.
Soucek was West Ham’s Hammer of the Year last season for a reason.
All round he proved to be the team’s most important and influential player. As a fan if you couldn’t see that for yourself the statistics were there to prove it.
He set a new top flight record for aerial duels won, a new top flight record for distance covered.
Soucek stopped goodness knows how many goals with defensive headers and blocks, scored 10 Premier League goals and laid on one assist.
The Czech man mountain looked a threat at every single West Ham set piece and in almost every attack last season.
Soucek was also in the top 10 Premier League players statistically last season. Only Dimitri Payet, Scott Parker and Paolo Di Canio have managed that in West Ham’s Premier League history.
This season Soucek looks castrated. A shadow of the player we saw last season and in the run-in after signing in the January before.
Some fans have put it down to fatigue. But as highlighted by Hammers News at the start of the season, Soucek is suffering as a result of Declan Rice’s new box-to-box roaming role.
And David Moyes has admitted as much himself (Football.London).
We predicted that we may see a rebirth of the real Soucek when Rice was suspended for the game against Watford at the end of December. And we duly did as the big Czech looked like the Soucek of old with a goal and all round excellent display in a 4-1 win.
West Ham inside source denies new contract claims about 16-goal star Tomas Soucek
With three goals in the season he joined, 10 goals last season and three so far this term, Soucek’s 16-goal haul (WhoScored) is still very impressive even if he hasn’t been as prolific of late.
If he catches fire again for the run-in, though, it could seriously help West Ham’s push for the top four.
The fan favourite remains one of West Ham’s key players. So it was unnerving to read new claims from GiveMeSport at the weekend that he may ‘walk away from the table’ in negotiations over a new Hammers contract.
West Ham fans need not worry about that, though, according to Hammers website Claret and Hugh.
Because they claim a West Ham insider has told them the ‘scare story’ is ‘best ignored’.
“There is no question he will be offered close to £100k plus appearances and other clauses which will be a major advance on his personal terms,” Claret and Hugh claim.
“And the key CandH source told us this morning that he would be at the club for the next three years regardless of the rumours.
“Our insider said: “We are looking at all key players at the end of the season. Tomas has over three years to go including our option.”
A relief if true. Because Soucek has so much more to give at West Ham.
It is just up to Moyes to find a way of making the new dynamic between Soucek and Rice work for the team.
