West Ham are in the picture to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window according to a report from Portuguese media outlet Record (print edition December 5th, page 8).
Hammers boss David Moyes allegedly wants to bring the 22-year-old hitman to the London Stadium.
Michail Antonio is currently our only recognised senior centre-forward.
That clearly isn’t good enough for a Premier League with aspirations of challenging for honours both domestically and on the continent.
It seems as though Moyes has someone in mind who would drastically improve the Hammers’ attacking options though.
West Ham in picture to make major striker signing in January transfer window
Record claims that the Hammers are one of the clubs interested in signing brilliant Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.
The Portuguese publication claims that Nunez’s agent is currently en route to Lisbon for talks regarding his client’s future.
The Uruguay international has been in fine form in Portugal this season with 11 goals and two assists in 17 games for Benfica to his name (Transfermarkt).
Nunez’s playing style is quintessentially South American.
He is a tenacious presser, plays with real physicality and has real technical ability. The 22-year-old seems to be ideally suited for the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.
We would absolutely love Moyes to bring the Uruguayan to the London Stadium in January.
Luis Suarez recently raved about his compatriot, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News:
“I told them (Barcelona), ‘pay attention to this one, he’s very good, he shows interesting things’. Instead of paying now €80 million, €90m or €100m they would’ve paid €15m or €20m and have him there as a substitute, a player needs to be empowered.”
Now, there is one huge problem. His release clause stands at a massive €150 million (£130 million) according to Record.
It’s not all and news though.
Benfica may well let him go for a lot less than his release clause. AC Milan are interested in signing the 22-year-old as well and AC Milan Info claims that €40 million (£34 million) could be enough to prise him away from the Portuguese giants.
It will be interesting to see just how ambitious West Ham are in January. With Benfica in the title race in Portugal, however, a summer move for Nunez will be far more likely in my opinion.
