Tottenham have joined the race to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes in the summer transfer window.
Fernandes was the Hammers’ standout player in the 2025/26 season and is now wanted by several top European clubs.
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have all recently been linked with signing the Portuguese international.
Nobody expected West Ham’s London rivals, Tottenham, to throw their hats into the ring.
Reporter Ben Jacobs has now explained the story behind Spurs’ interest in adding Fernandes to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.

Tottenham join the race for Mateus Fernandes
Tottenham are still considered an unlikely destination for Mateus Fernandes if he leaves West Ham this summer.
Michael Carrick’s Man Utd are the leading contenders to sign the midfielder ahead of both Real Madrid and PSG.
However, Spurs have already shown ambition in this window, with several rumoured moves for Premier League stars.
Brighton defender Jean Paul van Hecke and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali are both reportedly on their summer shortlist.
Fernandes appears to be the latest name to catch Tottenham’s eye, as they have enquired about the West Ham star.
“They’re looking at the market with various names,” Jacobs explained on The Last Word on Spurs podcast.
“They made an enquiry for Mateus Fernandes, even though the direction of travel there is Manchester United or PSG.
“Real Madrid could even enter that race, but he was another player that they looked at.
DISCUSS: How much would you sell Crysencio Summerville for this summer? 💰
Summerville's value is only going one way after his World Cup heroics 📈
“Funny, because Tottenham and West Ham just don’t do that much business ever, and yet we might get a flurry now, because the reports around Crysencio Summerville were legitimate, even though West Ham tried to deny it at the time.”
Tottenham’s interest in Fernandes makes perfect sense, as De Zerbi looks to rebuild his midfield this summer.
Despite West Ham’s struggles, the 21-year-old proved that he deserves to be playing for a team challenging for the European places.
However, Tottenham have finished 17th in the Premier League in consecutive seasons and have not qualified for Europe.
Even though he would likely receive a pay rise, it would be a strange move for Fernandes with several better options.
West Ham would probably also prefer to sell him anywhere other than Spurs after their recent relegation battle.
It is too early for Hammers supporters to be fearful of Fernandes joining Tottenham, but it is certainly a deal to keep an eye on.
