West Ham tried but failed to sign a new striker in the summer and many feel it could cost the club a European place this season.

Newcastle United have no such problems with the brilliant Aleksander Isak and Callum Wilson among their ranks.

West Ham and Newcastle have been linked with mutual interest in a host of players since the Saudi takeover at St James’ Park.

Hammers technical director Tim Steidten flew to Brazil to try and sign a striker before the summer window deadline.

While there he reportedly held talks with Santos to sign Brazilian wonderkid Leonardo. In the end the move did not happen.

After Moyes admits long, hard striker search and envy of Newcastle over Isak, Magpies want to swoop on his target

Well his envy of the Magpies may grow stronger as it is being reported Eddie Howe wants to hijack West Ham’s move for Leonardo.

According to TMW and Get Football News Italy, Roma have dropped their interest in the Hammers target after signing Romelu Lukaku.

But the reports claim Newcastle are interested and are ‘studying the possibility of moving for him in January’.

“The striker would also be interested in leaving Santos in January, with the Brazilian side having endured a difficult campaign as they find themselves at 15th in the table,” the reports state.

“In 24 games, Leonardo has scored 13 times and has also racked up two assists in what has been an otherwise disappointing campaign for Santos.”
