It has been a season to forget for West Ham winger Said Benrahma so far.

After the highs of scoring in the Europa Conference League final to help West Ham lift their first major trophy in over four decades, Benrahma has found himself down David Moyes’ pecking order this term.

Benrahma has also endured a torrid time with Algeria. The Hammers ace was blasted by a teammate over a tussle to take a penalty and then physically confronted by the national team boss after being substituted.

The arrivals of Mohammed Kudus and midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez has seen Lucas Paqueta often pushed out to the left. As a result Benrahma has slipped out of West Ham’s side.

When Benrahma has had chances of late he has flattered to deceive too.

Against Freiburg in the Europa League last month, supporters were unimpressed by his lack of work rate and effort.

Although it is understandable that Benrahma might be demotivated, many raised concerns over one particular passage of play where he halfheartedly chased a through ball which might have led to a goal despite having a 10-yard headstart on his marker.

It seems the winger has got some fire back in his belly, though.

Oooooh Said Benraaaaaahma

With the score at 0-0, Arsenal were breaking on West Ham at lightning speed through Reiss Nelson.

The Gunners winger had started the game brightly and was sprinting down’s West Ham’s left on what looked an extremely dangerous counter attack.

Up step Benrahma.

Great to see fire back in winger’s belly

If that passage of play over in Germany had suggested Benrahma had given up on his Hammers career, this was the opposite.

The 28-year-old summoned every ounce of his sprinting power to chase Nelson for 70 yards, catch him up and make a great challenge to stop the attack.

The moment led to one of the biggest cheers of the night in the London Stadium. And it turned out to be key in the context of the game too.

Because just a couple of minutes later West Ham took a 1-0 lead, giving them the foundation for their 3-1 victory over the Gunners.

It was great to see the fight and passion from Benrahma, long may it continue. Because he could still have a big say in West Ham’s season.
