There is fantastic news for West Ham about the Liverpool cup draw after the bitter blow of being handed yet another “Big Six” tie.
From the moment the final whistle went on West Ham’s 3-1 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup fourth round last night, Hammers fans knew what was coming next.
There was a sense of inevitability that West Ham would be drawn away against a rejuvenated Liverpool in the quarter-finals.
Don’t take our word for it, though. A quick search on social media will bring up thousands of West Ham fans predicting ‘it’s going to be Liverpool away isn’t it’ during the seemingly never-ending wait for the draw for the last eight to be made.
And so it was. The reason for the air of inevitability around West Ham drawing Liverpool is simple.

Since the 2010/11 season, West Ham have now drawn a so-called “Big Six” side 19 times in the domestic cups.
As Andy Cole confirmed West Ham will visit their most unhappy of hunting grounds that is Anfield with the final pick of the draw, there was a collective groan among Hammers fans.
But there’s fantastic news for West Ham about the Liverpool cup draw after bitter blow of being handed yet another “Big Six” tie.
Because the match could come at the perfect time for West Ham and the worst possible time for Jurgen Klopp’s Red men.

Hammers inserted into one of Liverpool’s biggest weeks of the season
The match is due to be played the week commencing December 18th.
That is slap bang in the middle of what is now four games in nine days for the Reds and the Hammers. And arguably one of Liverpool’s biggest weeks of the entire season.
But the fixtures either side of facing West Ham are infinitely more intense, higher profile and important for Liverpool.
While Liverpool face a trip to Belgium to play Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday December 14th, West Ham play Freiburg at home.

Every cloud has a silver(ware) lining?
Liverpool then have their biggest game of the season at home against Man United on Sunday December 17th while West Ham play Wolves at home the same day.
West Ham then travel to Anfield on the Tuesday or Wednesday. But crucially – after that big game against Man United – Liverpool boss Klopp will face a quandary with another huge game against title rivals Arsenal on the Saturday, December 23rd.
The Hammers face Man United that day at home but will be under nothing like the pressure Liverpool are to field their strongest team and get results in those two Premier League games sandwiching the West Ham cup clash.
Liverpool at home are always tough regardless. But a weakened Liverpool gives West Ham a real chance of making the semi-finals.
Every cloud and all that.
